Moscow dismisses Belarus’ truce proposal: “The special military operation is the only way to achieve the objectives”
March 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, assured this Friday that the peace plan proposed by China cannot be carried out due to “lack of will” on the part of the Ukrainian authorities, whom he accuses of continuing with the war for orders coming out of Kiev.
Peskov explained that Ukraine’s “unwillingness” or “incapacity” “to disobey its supervisors and commanders” makes it impossible to implement Beijing’s negotiation proposal, according to the Interfax agency.
“These commanders, as we know, are not in Kiev and insist that the war continue,” Peskov has said, echoing the Kremlin’s assertions that Western allies set Ukraine’s political agenda.
Peskov has expressed himself in this sense when he has been asked if the plan proposed by China is similar to the one put on the table this Friday by the Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko, who has advocated declaring a truce as a step prior to initiating a negotiation between Moscow and Kiev.
“I think it is not appropriate to compare these two approaches,” he replied when asked which of the two is more to the liking of the Kremlin.
Regarding this proposal launched by Lukashenko, Peskov has assured that Moscow will listen to what he has to say when he meets next week with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but he has stressed that Moscow’s objectives include continuing with what what they call a “special military operation”.
Nothing changes regarding Ukraine, the special military operation continues because it is the only way we currently have to achieve our goals,” Peskov concluded.
On the other hand, he has pointed out that the possibility of nuclear weapons being deployed in Ukraine “cannot be ignored”, as some Kiev authorities have been proposing, as “it is not something new”.
Thus, although he has recognized that not all of Kiev’s requests can be taken seriously, he has recalled how two years ago, the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, already mentioned such a possibility at the 2021 Munich Security Conference.
