Russian authorities have said on Tuesday that they will “closely follow” the NATO summit to be held in Washington between Tuesday and Thursday, while reiterating their accusations against the Alliance for its “direct participation” in the war in Ukraine.

“We will of course closely monitor the rhetoric used, the negotiations and the decisions taken and recorded in writing,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency.

He also reiterated that NATO considers Moscow to be “an enemy” and has stated on several occasions that it seeks a “strategic defeat” of the Eurasian country, while emphasizing that the Alliance “is directly participating in the Ukrainian conflict on the side of Ukraine.”

NATO leaders hope to agree at a summit in Washington on July 9-11 on the €40 billion annual financial aid for Ukraine proposed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who hopes this figure will be the “minimum” reference for support that he wants to be reviewed and expanded annually.

The summit, the first in which Sweden will participate as a full member, will kick off on July 9 with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Alliance and will feature, on its second day, the presence of Ukrainian President Volomidir Zelensky, who will travel to Washington to participate in the meetings.
