Russia raises Ukrainian army casualties during Kursk offensive to over 14,600

September 18 () –

Russian authorities reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have suffered 14,600 “casualties” in the framework of the offensive launched last August against the Russian province of Kursk, located in the southwest of the country and near the border with Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that among those casualties were “killed and wounded” Ukrainian soldiers, and added that the Ukrainian army had also lost 121 tanks, 50 infantry vehicles, 92 armored personnel carriers, 758 armored combat vehicles, 107 artillery pieces, 28 multiple launch systems, seven US-made HIMARS systems and six MLRS rocket launchers, among others.

However, the Ukrainian army continues to advance in the province, where it has managed to take control of more than 100 towns and some 1,300 kilometres of Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted that the incursion is progressing “as planned” despite the army having suffered defeats and has stressed that the aim is to get Moscow to divert its attention from Ukrainian territory.

Russia, for its part, has been working hard since the first stages of this operation to repel the Ukrainian advance, and in the last week has confirmed the recovery of a dozen towns.
