The Russian government has promised this Wednesday that those who fight alongside Russian troops in Ukraine as volunteers will receive the status of war veterans once the armed conflict ends.
To do this, as explained by the Russian authorities, it is necessary to make amendments to the veterans law, as reported by the Interfax news agency. Also, volunteers who are injured in the framework of the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be able to apply for the relevant subsidies like any other military.
“The proposed solution allows volunteers and their families, together with Armed Forces personnel, to opt for the benefits and social measures provided by law for this group of workers,” the government said in a statement.
Last March, the Russian Parliament adopted a new law on veterans that mainly affected those who were already part of the Russian Army but had gone on to participate in the invasion.
Shortly after, the regulations were expanded to include those civilians who had joined the Russian forces. In early August, legislation was amended to ensure that Russian Security Service border guards participating in the war also receive veteran status.
