Russia introduces life imprisonment for those convicted of treason

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has ratified this Friday the legislation that modifies the Criminal Code to introduce life imprisonment for crimes of high treason and toughens the penalties for terrorist activities.

Thus, activities considered treason go from being punished with up to 20 years in prison to life imprisonment; while acts of terrorism will be punished with up to 20 years in prison instead of the fifteen in force until now.

The crimes of international terrorism will be punished from now on with penalties ranging from twelve years in prison to life imprisonment. Recruitment for terrorist activities will be punished with up to seven years in prison and crimes of complicity with up to twelve years in prison.

The Russian president has also ratified the increase in penalties for participants in terrorist organizations –from 10 to 15 years in prison–, and acts of sabotage will be punished with up to 20 years in prison, according to TASS.
