This Wednesday, Russia included the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Center for Civil Liberties of Ukraine, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, on its 'blacklist' of foreign international organizations. .

The three organizations had already been declared “undesirable” in Russian territory by the Prosecutor's Office, although this Wednesday the Ministry of Justice officially added them to the list. NGOs labeled as such cannot operate in Russia, according to the TASS news agency.

The Boris Nemtsov Freedom Foundation was created in November 2015 in Germany to preserve the legacy of the opposition figure after whom the NGO is named, who was shot dead in the center of Moscow. After his death, five people of Chechen origin were arrested, although several civil organizations point out that those responsible have not been held accountable before justice.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned in July 2023 that the investigation into his death was “insufficient.” The political leader, who was Russia's deputy prime minister in the late 1990s, opposed the sending of troops to Ukraine in 2014 and was highly critical of corruption in Chechnya.

For its part, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom was founded in 1958 by Theodor Heuss, the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany, and aims to promote freedom, education and Human Rights.

The Center for Civil Liberties of Ukraine, which was created in 2007 to promote democracy and the defense of Human Rights in Ukraine, received the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2022. It is led by lawyer and activist Oleksandra Matviichuk.
