Russia fines Wikipedia again 9,000 euros for “false information”

25 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

A Russian court has imposed on Tuesday a new fine of 800,000 rubles (about 9,000 euros) against the encyclopedic portal Wikipedia for allegedly spreading “false information” and refusing to remove it.

Thus, it has declared the Wikimedia Foundation, owner of the Russian edition of Wikipedia, guilty in accordance with article 13 of the Administrative Code of Russia and has decided to impose a fine on the organization, according to information from the TASS news agency.

The materials included in the case show, according to the indictment, that Wikipedia disseminated “false information about the activities of the Jamaat Tabligh group,” an Indian Islamic religious movement recognized in Russia as an extremist group.

In April 2022, the court fined Wikipedia for refusing to remove articles about the events recorded in the city of Bucha during the war, the destruction of a hospital and a theater in Mariupol, and other issues related to the actions of the Russian Armed Forces. in the framework of the invasion of Ukraine.

Russian authorities have insisted that restricted materials be removed from the portal, including false information about the advances of Ukrainian forces. Therefore, the Wikipedia Foundation will appear in search engines with a notice showing that it “has violated Russian law.”
