The Russian authorities have expressed this Thursday their “concern” about the increase in tension around the Nagorno-Karabakh region, in dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan, after new clashes between the parties were recorded.
Thus, Moscow has called on the parties to act with “moderation” and avoid an increase in tension, as reported by the Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, during a press conference.
“We are closely following (the situation) and of course we are concerned about the escalation of tensions,” he asserted before adding that Russia expects the parties involved to comply with the “trilateral documents” issued in November 2020 after ending the war. .
His words come a day after two Armenian soldiers were killed and nearly twenty wounded in new clashes with nearby Azeri soldiers. Baku, for its part, has indicated that at least one member of the Army has died, while the Ministry of Defense has assured that the situation is completely “under control of the Azeri units.”
This Thursday, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinián, has asked Russia to frustrate “any attempt” to violate the contact line in the region and has warned that the Azeri military deployed in the area will be withdrawn.
