The newspaper The New York Times published information on Tuesday stating that Surovikin was aware of Prigozhin’s plans, according to US intelligence sources cited by the aforementioned newspaper.

Last week the head of the Wagner Group mercenaries, Yevgeny Prigozhin, staged an armed riot after claiming that Russian military leaders had killed large numbers of his fighters in an airstrike and vowing revenge. The same Saturday morning Prigozhin seized control of the Russian General Staff of the city of Rostov and put the Kremlin in check. However, as the hours passed he ordered his troops to stop the rebellion, turn back and return to his bases.

Surovikin would have been aware of the plot at all times and for that reason now he would have been arrested, as reported The Moscow Times. The general, known as the “bloody dog” of the Kremlin for his cruelty in conflicts such as those in Syria or Chechnya, had not been the military right-hand man of Russian President Vladimir Putin for a long time. For this reason, in January, as reported by Jara Atienza, he was removed from office and replaced by the current chief of the General Staff of the Russian Army, Valery Gerasimov.
