Russia’s Defense Ministry announced Sunday that its fighter jets had prevented two US strategic bombers from approaching its airspace again over the Barents Sea.
According to a statement from the Ministry, Russian MiG-29 and MiG-31 aircraft were forced to approach two B-52N bombers of the US Air Force on Sunday after detecting a “group air target approaching the state border of the Russian Federation.”
The Defense Ministry said that as the Russian fighters approached, “the American strategic bombers began to turn away from the state border of the Russian Federation” to move away from the boundaries of the airspace.
“The Russian aircraft returned safely to their home airfields and no violation of the state border of the Russian Federation was allowed,” the Russian Defense Ministry added in its statement.
The Ministry, as on other occasions, has indicated that the flight of the Russian fighters “was carried out in strict accordance with international norms for the use of airspace over neutral waters and in compliance with security measures.”
The US Army has not yet commented on the incident.
