Russia declares eight Greek diplomats persona non grata

June 27. () –

The Russian authorities have summoned the Greek ambassador in Moscow, Ekaterina Nasika, to inform her that the Kremlin has declared ‘persona non grata’ eight members of the diplomatic legation of Greece, who have been given eight days to leave the Eurasian country.

Nasika has been summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where representatives of said portfolio have transferred their “strong protest in relation to the course of confrontation of the Greek authorities towards Russia”.

The diplomatic portfolio has included in these actions the supply of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine and the declaration of a group of Russian diplomats as ‘persona non grata’ in Athens, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

“We are talking about the direct consequences of the hostile actions initiated by the Greek authorities (…) All responsibility for this lies solely with Athens. It is indicated that in case the anti-Russian policy continues, we reserve the right to respond” , has settled the foreign portfolio.

Previously, this Monday, the Greek authorities have cut off their contacts with the Russian embassy and consulate in the Mediterranean country, as the Russian ambassador in Athens, Andrei Maslov, has advanced before the cameras of the Rossiya 24 television network.

Although Maslov has defended that the Russian diplomatic services in Greece are prepared to provide assistance to citizens who require it, he has recognized that the possibilities from now on are more “limited”.

Already in early April, the Greek government ordered the expulsion of twelve Russian diplomatic employees, to which the Russian foreign spokeswoman, Maria Zajarova, denounced that Athens was prioritizing “transatlantic solidarity” over its own bilateral relations with Moscow.
