The Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, has affirmed that the operation in Ukraine is being “very, very difficult”, and has recognized that the initial objectives of the Russian invasion “are still far from being fully executed”.
In an interview with the Serbian ATV channel, Peskov updated the situation at the front, accusing the West of dragging out the war: “Why has a year passed and there is still so much to do? The special military operation began as a conflict between Russia and Ukraine. (…) But actually at that time it was hard to imagine that NATO members, the United States and European countries, first indirectly and then directly, would interfere in that conflict.”
He has also ensured that what Russia does “is not war”, since “making war is something completely different, it is the total destruction of infrastructure, the total destruction of cities, etc.” “We do not do that,” the spokesman insisted, “we are trying to save the infrastructure and we are trying to save human lives.”
Regarding the offensive in Bakhmut, Peskov believes that “it will be brought under Russian control” sooner or later, although he has described the fighting in the Ukrainian city as “quite intense.”
He has also denied the statements of the Wagner Group, which have accused Russia of not sending the necessary soldiers to the city and the Russian military of abandoning their posts: “I will not mention anyone’s name, but I will say that regardless of what they say and “From the statements they make, we are talking about the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Those are all Russian forces, they are all the same and they always pursue the same goal.”
