The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday a new commander in charge of the Russian forces deployed in Ukraine, where Moscow is holding open what it describes as a “special military operation.”

The Government has confirmed in a statement the appointment of Valeri Gerasimov as the new military officer in Ukraine, as well as who will be his subordinates, without specifying the reasons for this change, reports the Interfax news agency.

Gerasimov, who was already a relevant figure within the organization chart of the Armed Forces, replaces Sergei Surovikin, appointed in November 2022 and who will now serve as deputy.

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has also advocated in a government meeting to continue strengthening arms aspects and “without a doubt” to solve “all the problems” related to the supply of the troops deployed in Ukrainian territory, according to the TASS agency.

Logistical problems, as well as others related to the chain of command, would be marking the deployment of Russia in the neighboring country, where the fighting continues, mainly in the eastern zone. This Wednesday, the parties have given contradictory versions about the situation in the town of Soledar, a few kilometers from Bajmut.
