July 24 () –

The Kremlin has accused Ukraine on Monday of “a deliberate attack” after the death of the journalist of the Russian news agency RIA Novosti Rostislav Zhuravlev in an attack carried out over the weekend against a vehicle in which he was traveling through an area of eastern Ukraine under Russian control.

“It is a deliberate attack against journalists and, of course, the responsibility for this falls on the Kiev regime,” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dimitri Peskov, as reported by the TASS news agency.

“The death of any person is, of course, a tragedy, but in this case we are talking about the death of a journalist who was carrying out his job,” he said, before stressing that “all over the world this is considered a very serious crime, in this case committed by the Kiev regime.”

Finally, he has transferred his “deep condolences” to the workers of RIA Novisti and “to the entire journalistic sector of the country”, as well as to the family and friends of Zhuravlev.

The attack, carried out in the town of Piatijatki, located in the province of Zaporizhia, also caused injuries to photojournalist Konstantin Mijalchevskki, who was accompanying Zhuravlev in the attacked vehicle. Likewise, journalists Roman Polshakov, from the Russian newspaper ‘Izvestia’, who suffered the impact of four shrapnel projectiles, and another informant identified as Dimitri Shikov, were injured.

After the event, the Russian Ministry of Defense stressed that the journalists were attacked with cluster bombs. “The state of health of the other journalists is of a moderate and stable prognosis. Their lives are not in danger and they are receiving all the necessary medical attention,” he said.
