RSF describes as "historic" the resolution of the European Parliament that breaks the "silence" on Morocco

Jan. 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has celebrated the “historic” resolution of the European Parliament that denounces the deterioration of press freedom in Morocco, to the extent that it breaks the “silence” that consists of exempting the Alaouite kingdom from any observation .

“Better late than never,” said RSF secretary general Christophe Deloire, whose NGO has for years warned of “intimidation and judicial harassment” of which Moroccan journalists are victims. Three of them remain “arbitrarily” detained.

The organization emphasizes the vast majority that has given the green light to the text –356 votes in favour, 32 against and 42 abstentions–, which calls for respect for freedom of expression and of the media, denounces the use of the ‘Pegasus’ espionage program and also called for “a fair process” for the imprisoned journalists: Omar Radi, Sulaiman Raisuni and Taufik Buachrine.

The resolution also incorporates an amendment that points out the “deep concern over the accusations that the Moroccan authorities have corrupted deputies in the European Parliament” and calls for the same controls adopted for Qatar to be applied to Morocco.

Morocco ranks 135 out of 180 countries with which RSF draws up its World Press Freedom Classification.
