ROSA: Practical Energy Efficiency Options in the Water and Sanitation Sector – Panama (Session 5)

On October 10, ECLAC held the fifth ROSA online training for Panama, focused on “Practical Energy Efficiency Options in the Water and Sanitation Sector.” This session, led by Silvia Saravia Matus, Economic Affairs Officer of ECLAC, lasted two hours and included the participation of experts in the area of water resources, Diego Fernández, Alfredo Montañez and Pedro Chavarro.

The training began with a welcome to attendees, followed by a detailed presentation on energy audits and applied operational efficiency cases. Load management measures were highlighted, the operation of pumping systems outside of peak tariff demand times, and recommendations and economic benefits derived from these practices were offered.

One of the key topics addressed was the use of variable frequency drives (VFD), a technology that allows improving the energy efficiency of pumping systems, accompanied by practical cases on replacing motors with higher efficiency options. In addition, solutions were presented to reduce reactive energy consumption through the use of capacitors, which allows increasing the power factor of the systems.

The session also included a theoretical section on the determination of methane and an analysis of cases applied in Panama, Mexico and El Salvador, where examples of economic and financial evaluation of energy efficiency projects were presented.

The closing of the training included a summary of the most important conclusions, followed by an exit survey to evaluate the session. With this type of training, ECLAC reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable and efficient practices in the water and sanitation sector, strengthening the technical capacity of the actors involved in the region.
