And it will connect users with outside help for more serious cases.
China the first country to use AI in court
According to DailyMail UK, China has been the first to use artificial intelligence in the courtroom.
Last July, it was revealed that the Asian nation is using technology to “improve” its judicial system by recommending laws, drafting documents and flagging “perceived human errors” in rulings.
Judges are now required to consult the AI in each case by law, the Beijing Supreme Court said in an update on the system, and if they go against its recommendation, they must submit a written explanation as to why.
The AI has also been connected to police databases and China’s social credit system.
China has been developing a “smart court” system since 2016, when Chief Justice Qiang Zhou called for technology to improve the “fairness, efficiency and credibility” of the judicial system.
That has meant introducing robotic courtroom receptionists to offer legal help online, automatic voice recognition recorders in courthouses that eliminate the need for transcription, and ‘virtual courts’ where cases can be heard online.
China has even introduced a highly specialized “Internet court” that deals solely with cases involving the virtual world, such as online lending, domain name disputes, and copyright issues.
