Rishi Sunak was elected as the new leader of the Conservatives in the UK and is therefore the new Prime Minister. Just three months ago, this politician contested the nomination against Liz Truss, who was elected, but only 45 days later she left office. Now Sunak is the new resident of 10 Downing Street. Who is this young politician, the son of Indian immigrants, who caught the attention of the British during the confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic?
Rishi Sunak was born in the city of Southampton, is a graduate of Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford and jumped onto the political scene as Chancellor of the Exchequer for former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
He was also involved in the ‘partygate’ scandal, for which he had to pay a fine. During his administration, he focused on providing assistance to those who received the most intense economic effects during the pandemic; he gave nearly $400 billion in funding and grants.
Sunak was strongly singled out by conservatives for his high economic position, for belonging to a wealthy family thanks to his marriage. Some say that belonging to the upper class would distance him from the reality facing the British.
How much connection does Sunak have with the average British citizen? What is the front that the new prime minister should attack as a priority? Which direction should the UK take? How can this country recover the leadership at European and world level that Brexit promised? We analyze the panorama in the United Kingdom from the hand of our guests:
