July 18 () –
Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak has been the most voted in the third vote of the Conservative Party deputies who will elect Boris Johnson’s successor as party leader and new prime minister in an appointment in which Tom Tugendhat has been definitively ruled out.
Sunak has achieved 115 votes, ahead of Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt (82) and Foreign Affairs Minister Liz Truss (71). Behind are the former Minister of Equality Kemi Badenoch (58) and the eliminated, Tugendhat, with 31 supports.
Sunak has improved by 14 compared to the last vote. Badenoch has won nine and Truss, seven despite having received the public support of one of the last disqualified, Suella Braverman. Mordaunt and Tugendhat have each lost one. Thus, Sunak is only five votes away from guaranteeing himself a place in the final vote.
Tugendhat has posted a message on Twitter in which he has stated that he is “immensely proud of the positive vision” put forward by his campaign.
This same Tuesday a new round of voting is scheduled and on Wednesday the deputies will vote again to leave only two contenders.
These two candidates will submit to a vote by mail of the 200,000 party members. The new Conservative leader and therefore the new British Prime Minister will be announced on September 5.
