Rescue ship 'Ocean Viking' saves 37 people in Mediterranean waters

7 Jan. () –

The rescue ship ‘Ocean Viking’, of the humanitarian organization SOS Méditerranée, has rescued 37 immigrants in distress off the coast of Libya in the last few hours, as reported by the group itself on its Twitter account.

The migrants were sailing in a crowded boat and some of the passengers had fuel burn injuries. All of them had left the North African coast to reach the European Union.

On the other hand, the Italian media have reported, also in the last hours, the sinking of a migrant boat between the Tunisian coast and the Italian island of Lampedusa with almost three dozen people on board. Three of them died, including a small child.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior estimates that more than 100,000 people arrived on the country’s coasts in 2022, a figure that it considers unaffordable. More than 1,300 migrants and refugees have lost their lives on this route, according to estimates by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
