Relatives of Tempe train crash victims sue Greek PM

May 16. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The relatives of the victims of the train accident that took place in Larisa in March and which resulted in 58 deaths have filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and several ministers of his Executive, as well as against the company Hellenic Train.

The lawsuit, filed by the Association of Victims of the Tempe Accident before the Larisa Appeals Prosecutor, seeks to attribute responsibility for the tragedy to both the current and previous governments and also coincides with the final stretch of the electoral campaign in Greece of ahead of the May 21 elections.

Specifically, in the text, signed by the president of the aforementioned association, Christos Konstantinidis, husband of one of the victims, appears, among others, the resigned Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Greece Konstantinos Karamanlis.

Another of the objectives of the lawsuit is to ask the Greek authorities for an investigation to find out the details of the railway system 15 years before the tragedy happened, that is, until 2008, the ERT chain has collected.

The tragedy took place when a passenger train, with about 350 people on board, collided with a freight train, causing the derailment of three carriages with passengers. The accident resulted in the death of 57 people and around 80 were injured.

After the accident, the head of Transport submitted his resignation, while two of the top managers of the Hellenic Railway Organization (OSE) also resigned. Thousands of people took to the streets in March to protest the poor state of the rail system and to demand new security measures from the government.
