Registered a magnitude 7.1 earthquake north of New Zealand

March 16 () –

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 on the open Richter scale has shaken the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand on Thursday, with no information on casualties or damage for the moment.

The New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has indicated that the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 22 kilometers, has not raised the tsunami alert, so it has ruled out the threat of it.

According to information collected by the New Zealand newspaper ‘The New Zealand Herald’, the earthquake occurred some 1,000 kilometers away from the north island of the country.

New Zealand is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where about 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur.
