An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale has shaken the Indonesian province of Sumatra, located in the south of the country, on Tuesday, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) reported on Wednesday.
The tremor has taken place in the sea 68 kilometers southwest of the city of Bengkulu, which has a population of more than 300,000 inhabitants, according to the latest census. The hypocenter of the earthquake is located at a depth of 16 kilometers.
Likewise, the authorities have indicated that despite the proximity of this earthquake to the coast, the characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami.
