( Spanish) — The Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office reported that it is investigating the death of Raúl Padilla López, president of the Guadalajara International Book Fair and former rector of the University of Guadalajara.
According to the prosecution, Padilla López took his own life at his home in the city of Guadalajara. He adds that a firearm and a posthumous note were found at the scene.
The governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, said that he had contact with Padilla López’s brother and with the rector of the University of Guadalajara to express his condolences.
Padilla was rector of said academic institution between 1989 and 1995. The university itself recognizes that “during his tenure, a comprehensive university reform was promoted that placed the institution at the height of its times.”
The academic coordinated and chaired the FIL Guadalajara, one of the most important literary and cultural events in Latin America.
