( Spanish) – The heavy rains that fell this weekend in the department of Chocó, in western Colombia, have left at least 25,355 families affected, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) reported this Saturday in its account. x.
The agency said that the rainfall and the resulting floods have caused damage in 22 of the 31 municipalities of Chocó.
Hours before, the UNGRD reported that it had been decided to install a Crisis Room to monitor the situation, keep track of the number of affected people and take measures.
Separately, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo, said on his X account that this Sunday the UNGRD will announce actions to confront what the official described as a “humanitarian emergency.”
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced that he canceled his trip to Azerbaijan, where he would participate in the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 29), to address the situation in Chocó.
“The emergency will be declared and with the limited resources we have we will provide first aid and relocation of climate victims in Chocó,” he said in X.
Throughout this week, the rains have caused various effects in Colombia. This Wednesday, they caused flooding in sections of the North Highway of Bogotá, where dozens of people were trapped and had to be evacuated by rescue forces.
