( Spanish) – The heavy rains and floods that occurred this Wednesday left dozens of people and vehicles trapped on the North Highway of Bogotá, the Mayor’s Office of the capital of Colombia reported in its X account.
The institution said that authorities have so far evacuated 121 children who were going from their schools to their homes and that there are still three buses to be evacuated. He added that light vehicles are being removed with cranes.
Mayor Carlos Galán reported that so far they have detected at least three points on the highway with “serious” flooding, and that firefighters, police and rescue forces are concentrating on the area to care for the affected people.
The official asked citizens to avoid going to the place to facilitate the work of the authorities and, if they know of more trapped school routes, to report the situation by telephone.
The highway is prone to flooding like this Wednesday because it is built on a wetland, Galán explained. The mayor’s office anticipates that unblocking the roads will take between four and six hours.
