Raids related to January 8 riots in Brasilia

The Brazilian Federal Police launched this Friday raids against people allegedly involved in the assault on government buildings on January 8 by former President Jair Bolsonaro, a statement reported.

Police said the operation aims to “identify the people who participated in, financed or fomented” the riots, and included eight preventive arrest warrants and 16 arrest warrants in five states and the capital Brasilia.

The note did not reveal the names of the people who were the object of the operation, but said that they are being investigated for the crimes of “violent abolition of the rule of law, coup d’état, qualified damages, criminal association, incitement, destruction and deterioration of property specially protected”.

On January 8, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and looted the Congress building, the presidential palace and the Federal Supreme Court, in the worst attack on state institutions since Brazil’s return to democracy in the 1980s.

The most recent orders were issued by the Federal Supreme Court, police said, adding that investigations are still ongoing and the newly launched operation would become permanent.

The Federal Police added that it will report periodically on the number of warrants issued and people arrested.
