Race to succeed Sunak comes down to four names, with Robert Jenrick still in the lead

September 10 () –

Conservative MPs on Tuesday held a new vote to choose Rishi Sunak’s successor, eliminating Mel Stride, while former Immigration Secretary Robert Jenrick remains in the lead.

Sunak announced his resignation in July following the Tory debacle in the parliamentary elections, although he remains in office pending the appointment of his replacement. Six people were in the running to succeed him, but after the elimination of former Home Secretary Priti Pattel in the first round, it is now Stride’s turn, who has obtained only 16 votes.

Jenrick came out on top with 33 backings, ahead of former international trade minister Kemi Badenoch on 28 votes in favour. Tied in third place were Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly, the latter a former foreign secretary, with 21 votes in favour, Sky News reports.

The system establishes successive rounds of voting until only two possible options remain, with a final decision expected on November 2.
