Queen Letizia of Spain visits Guatemala to discuss cooperation issues

Queen Letizia of Spain began a three-day visit to Guatemala on Tuesday, where she will address cooperation issues and meet, among other personalities, with first lady Lucrecia Peinado.

Dressed in the distinctive red vest of Spanish Cooperation, the queen arrived at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday accompanied by her team and Eva María Granados, Secretary of State for International Cooperation.

The Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency of Guatemala reported that neither the Queen nor the First Lady will issue statements to the press during their trip.

Peinado will offer a breakfast in honor of the queen on Wednesday and, later, they plan to address the issue of mental health in Guatemala.

The presidency of the Central American country said that the queen’s trip is focused on three axes: the fight against child malnutrition, the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls – especially in indigenous populations – and youth, education, vocational training and decent work.

Spanish Cooperation, which is an initiative that integrates public and private actors for development projects, began its work in Guatemala in the 90s with programs and proposals on various topics, especially culture, youth and women’s rights.

The queen of Spain and the first lady of Guatemala will also take a walking tour on Wednesday through Centenario Park, in the historic center of the capital, to learn about the recovery works of public spaces where Spanish Cooperation has intervened.

On Thursday, he is scheduled to visit water and sanitation projects in the municipality of San José de Chacayá, in the department of Sololá, where he will also visit a project to help combat child malnutrition and meet with local leaders.

She will also visit projects to help indigenous women against violence in the department of Chimaltenango, where she will have a meeting with beneficiaries, before leaving Guatemala on Thursday night.
