It seems that Qualcomm has found the key to the generation of images through the artificial intelligence (AI) without the need to make use of the until now more than necessary graphics cards and all from an Android mobile.
With name Stable Diffusion 1.5, Qualcomm has developed an AI image generator that runs on these phones without the need for network access and in a matter of seconds. Note that the company has not yet revealed the details of the hardware of the smartphone used to use the tool and that it runs natively on it.
What he did want to show us is a demo video in which Qualcomm shows the version 1.5 of Stable Diffusion generating a 512 x 512 pixel image in less than 15 seconds.
In it, the company sends a text message and requests that Stable Diffusion create an image of a “super cute fluffy cat warrior in armor.” The AI-powered program does exactly that, taking advantage of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor to generate the image. in just 14.42 seconds.
Stable Diffusion AI images on Android in less than 15 seconds
the demo was achieved through “quantization”, which involves reducing the AI computing model for Stable Diffusion and optimizing it to run on the latest Qualcomm smartphone chip. The company’s engineers also made all kinds of custom optimizations on the software side to make Stable Diffusion work optimally.
“Quantization not only increases performance, but also saves power by allowing the model to run efficiently on our dedicated AI hardware and consume less memory bandwidth”the company said in the announcement.
To qualify one aspect and that is that Qualcomm also affirms that it is the first time that Stable Diffusion has been executed on a mobile Android and that really is not so. And it is that, the developer Ivon Huang already showed how he executed Stable Diffusion on a Sony Xperia 5 II with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 technology and 8 GB of RAM. Of course, here the feat is that record time of less than 15 seconds.
“Being able to run the model completely on the device without the need for an internet connection will bring endless possibilities”explains the company.
A Qualcomm executive also stated during a press conference that the company plans to exhibit this technology at MWC 2023so we look forward to hearing more about its efforts to run artificial intelligence tools on smartphones.
