Qatar warns of further violence in Middle East after Israeli strikes in Lebanon

Iran’s president stresses that “these crimes do not meet any humanitarian or international standards”

September 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Qatari government warned on Monday of “the growing cycle of violence in the region and its slide towards a full-blown regional war, in light of the ongoing war in the Strip” after condemning “in the strongest terms” the numerous Israeli bombings that during the day have killed almost 500 people in the context of clashes with the Lebanese Shiite party-militia Hezbollah.

“The continued escalation is primarily due to the absence of any deterrent to Israel’s actions, its continued and repeated violations of international law and its continued impunity from accountability,” the Qatari Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

He also pointed out that “this reality exacerbates the crises, puts the region on the brink of the abyss and exposes it to further tensions that will have a profound impact at the regional and international level.” He therefore called on the international community to “assume its responsibilities by taking urgent measures to force the Israeli occupation authorities to stop their brutal aggression against Lebanon and the Strip.”

While recommitting to supporting all regional and international efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in the region, the United Nations reaffirmed its firm position in support of Lebanon, its unity and territorial integrity, as well as its full support for all efforts to enhance its stability and prosperity.

Earlier, Egypt, which mediated with Qatar in the negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, expressed its “sincere solidarity” with Lebanon and its people, while offering its condolences to the loved ones of the victims, wishing a “speedy recovery” to the injured and expressing its “categorical rejection of any violation of the sovereignty of Lebanon and its territories.”

“As we continue efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and contain the dangers arising from the war there, we call on world powers and the UN Security Council to intervene immediately to stop the Israeli escalation in the region that endangers the fate of its peoples and undermines the prospects for peace,” he also said through his diplomatic portfolio.

IRAN: “THESE CRIMES WILL NOT GO UNANSWERED”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has “strongly condemned the crimes of the Zionist regime” in both the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, stressing that “these crimes do not meet any humanitarian or international standards and must end.” Speaking from New York, where he met with UN Secretary General António Guterres, he said that “these crimes, including the assassination of (Hamas leader Ismail) Haniyeh in Tehran, will not go unchallenged and that a response will be made in due time.”

Saudi Arabia, for its part, has indicated that it “follows the security situation in the Lebanese territories with great concern,” renewing its warning of the danger of the expansion of violence in the region and the serious repercussions of an escalation on the security and stability of the region.” Thus, it has urged “all parties to exercise maximum restraint,” as can be read in a statement.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also expressed its “deep concern over the attacks launched by Israel against southern Lebanon, as well as the continued escalation and its repercussions.” The Emirati authorities have called for international efforts “to stop the fighting and prevent bloodshed, and for civilians to enjoy full protection in accordance with international law.”

However, he stressed the UAE’s “firm position in rejecting violence, escalation and actions and reactions, without the slightest respect for the laws governing relations and sovereignty of States, which complicate the situation and increase the risks of instability, stressing the need to resolve disputes through diplomatic means, away from the language of confrontation and escalation.”
