Qatar conveys its "extreme concern" over the Taliban ban on women working in NGOs

Dec. 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Qatar has transmitted this Sunday its “extreme concern” about the decision of the Taliban to prohibit women from working in NGOs.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses the need to respect the right of women to work, since the freedom to choose and accept a job is a human right recognized by international conventions and must be complied with by all countries of the world,” read a statement.

In this sense, the Qatari authorities have reiterated their support for “all spectrums of the Afghan people to obtain all their rights.”

“Furthermore, the State of Qatar calls on the interim government to review its decision to allow women to work in the various jobs available to them in organizations, so that they contribute to the distribution and flow of aid. of the Afghan people,” the letter continues.

Qatar has acted as the venue for peace talks between the former Afghan government and the Taliban, who maintained a political office in Doha during failed peace talks with the United States.

In addition to its ties to the Taliban, Qatar has been seen in recent years as the unofficial interlocutor of the United States.
