The North Korean government has warned this Friday that the continuation by the United States of joint military exercises with South Korea can be considered a declaration of war against Pyongyang.
This was stated by the North Korean Foreign Minister, Kwon Jong Geun, who has accused Washington and Seoul of carrying out “prolonged deterrence exercises” as a test for an alleged nuclear war against North Korea, according to the KCNA agency.
“The United States must be clear that the continuation of its hostile and provocative acts against North Korea, despite our repeated protests and warnings, can be considered a declaration of war against our republic,” said the head of North Korean diplomacy.
He has also accused the United States of “constantly” threatening the security situation on the Korean peninsula and in the region, in addition to “unilaterally” denying North Korea’s right to self-determination and defense.
For this reason, he has stressed that “the only way” to break “the vicious circle” of the escalation of military tensions on the Korean peninsula is to take “clear and feasible measures”, including that the United States renounces deploying strategic assets in South Korea and end all joint military exercises.
In this sense, he has condemned the decision of the United States to bring “the question of the legitimate right” of a sovereign State to self-defense to the UN Security Council for discussion.
“I take this opportunity to once again remind you of our position that if the UN Security Council, subservient to the United States, once again puts our right to self-defense on the table, our appropriate strong countermeasures will continue,” the president added. Foreign Minister of North Korea.
