4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again launched a message in support of the Afghan Taliban, calling them “allies” of Russia in the “fight against terrorism” internationally, and especially in Central Asia.

“In general, we must proceed from the fact that the Taliban movement controls power in the country (Afghanistan) and in this sense, the Taliban are certainly our allies in the fight against terrorism,” the Russian president said, according to TASS.

Putin has urged Islamic fundamentalists to advocate for stability both within Afghanistan’s borders and abroad. “We have repeatedly received signals that they are ready to work with us,” the Russian leader said.

The Russian government announced at the end of May that it was willing to remove the Taliban from its list of terrorist groups, a proposal that seems to please Putin, who has referred on several occasions to the need to strengthen relations with Kabul.

The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021 after a meteoric advance to the capital amid the flight of then-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and international troops after two decades of military presence in the Asian country.

In September 2021, the Taliban formed an interim government headed by Mohammad Hasan Akhund, one of the founders of the movement. They have since imposed sharia law and restrictions on public life, particularly on women and girls.
