September 18 () –

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Wednesday extending the embargo on agricultural products from Western countries, introduced in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea, until December 31, 2026.

The decree extends the embargo – in force since Western countries sanctioned Moscow for the annexation of Crimea – for two more years after the Russian president extended the measure in September 2023 until the end of this year, according to the TASS news agency.

Putin signed a decree in August 2014 on “the application of special economic measures to ensure Russia’s security,” which involved restricting food imports from the United States, the European Union, Norway, Australia and Canada.

In 2015, the Russian government added countries such as Albania, Montenegro, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Ukraine to the list. Specifically, meat and dairy products, as well as fruit and vegetables, are subject to the embargo. In 2017, the Russian government banned the import of live pigs and animal fats.
