Provisional official results give Borisov's party victory in Bulgarian elections

MADRID 27 Oct. () –

Boiko Borisov’s Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party received the most votes in this Sunday’s legislative elections, the seventh in the last three years, although it will have to negotiate to form a government.

The conservative GERB has achieved 25.5 percent of the vote and 67 seats (out of a total of 240), according to projections published by the Bulgarian press. In second position would be Renaissance (Vazrazhdane), with 14.2 percent of votes, followed by We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB, 14.1 percent).

In fourth position would be the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS, 10.2 percent), ahead of the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (8.4 percent), BSP for Bulgaria-United Left (8, 1 percent), Such a People Exists (6.9 percent), Morality, Unity and Honor (MECh, 4.8 percent) and Greatness (Velichie, 4 percent).

With these results, Borisov will need two more parties or even three to be able to form a stable government, which leaves the country in the same situation of political precariousness as before the elections.

Regarding participation, the forecasts of a historic abstention have not been met and 34 percent attendance has been reached, the same figure as in the elections last June.

BORISOV STRETCHES A HAND

After the elections, Borisov has expressed his willingness to dialogue with “all possible partners”, except with Renacimiento. “Thank you to all the Bulgarians who have voted. With this participation we can talk more seriously about representation in this parliament. From today we are committed to forming a government. GERB’s victory is clear,” he argued.

Borisov has highlighted that his party has made numerous promises that they will respect for the trust of voters. “With this victory we are not going to replace the people’s vote. Our program, the one that the people voted for, will be fundamental for anyone who wants to be in government,” he argued.

“There are those who have already started to set conditions today. They explain how the winner must meet the conditions of those who have half the support. It is not pretty, nor fair,” he added.

He has also criticized the possibility of an “equidistant” prime minister. “It would be substituting the votes of the people. Nobody has voted for this person. We don’t even know who he is. The one who has put us in the waiting room of the eurozone of the banking union is GERB and its prime minister, Boiko Borisov,” has riveted
