Protests in Mauritania over the death of a human rights activist due to alleged police violence

12 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The death of the human rights activist (DDHH) Souvi Ould Chein in Mauritania under unknown circumstances and alleged police violence has triggered several protests this Sunday in the town of Dar-Naim, in Nouakchott.

The Mauritanian authorities have dispersed this Sunday the demonstrators who have come to protest at the doors of the Dar-Neim police station number 2, where Souvi Ould Chein was arrested last Thursday.

Until now, human rights organizations, political personalities and civil society have insisted on the opening of an investigation to clarify the causes of Souvi Ould Cheine’s death, according to the local newspaper ‘MauriWeb’.

The family of the young human rights defender, who is very active on social networks, has alleged that he was the victim of an interrogation at the police station shortly after his arrest and that he died due to the mistreatment he received. One of his sisters has assured that his lifeless body was transferred by the agents to the Cheikh Zayed hospital in Nouakchot, which showed signs of torture.

The president of the Mauritanian Association for Human Rights (AMDH), Maitre Fatimata Mbaye, has condemned this “intolerable act” and has called on the Mauritanian authorities to clarify what happened, according to RFI.

She has been joined by the opposition deputy and human rights defender Biram Dah Abeid, who asks “to assure Mauritanians that torture is truly considered by the State and its various bodies as a crime against humanity”, in statements by RFI .
