Colombo () – Thousands of protesters in the capital, Colombo, broke through police barricades and stormed the official residence of the president in one of the largest anti-government protests that the country has experienced since the beginning of the economic crisis. According to defense sources, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled when some protesters broke into the presidential residence.

At least 21 people, including two police officers, were injured in the clashes and taken to hospital. Yesterday the police, in anticipation of the demonstrations scheduled for the weekend, had imposed a curfew in the capital.

For months, the population has been protesting against the high cost of living and the unsustainable economic situation. In April, the island declared bankruptcy. Due to lack of foreign exchange, Sri Lanka is unable to import fuel and essential items. Many blame President Rajapaksa for the crisis in the country.
