Ruiz’s case gained notoriety in recent days, after feminist groups and the woman herself publicly questioned the sentence and even staged a march this Friday in Mexico City to show solidarity with the indigenous woman from Oaxaca.

Even this Friday, President López Obrador announced in his morning conference the possibility of pardoning Ruiz, should he proceed.

The woman has told the media that the attack she suffered in 2021 occurred when an acquaintance approached her while she was selling French fries on the street. The man asked her to stay the night at her house since she lived far away from her. Later that same night, the subject raped her.

Ruiz assures that both struggled and that during the fight the subject hit his head and died. She tried to get her body out of her house when the police arrested her and she spent nine months in pretrial detention until she was released on bail, she has said publicly.
