Prominent Russian opposition figure Ildar Dadin dies during fighting in Kharkiv (Ukraine)

MADRID 7 Oct. () –

The prominent Russian opponent and activist Ildar Dadin died this weekend during the fighting that is taking place in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv against the Russian Army, and he had been fighting since last December in the ranks of the paramilitary Russian Freedom Legion.

“It is with deep regret that I must report that Ildar Dadin ‘Gandhi’ died yesterday in combat in the Kharkov region. I knew Ildar by chance from the protests in Bolotnaya Square. Even then he proved to be a fearless and consistent fighter,” reported the former deputy of the Russian State Duma, Ilya Ponomarev, on his Facebook social network account.

Ponomarev, who is currently in exile and who was a close friend of Dadin, lamented that the opponent “will not live to see victory” but that his name “will appear on the streets of Russian cities.”

On the other hand, the Civic Council, an organization that is dedicated to recruiting Russian citizens to fight for Ukraine and that managed to get Dadin into the paramilitary group, has published on its Telegram channel an image of the activist accompanied by a ‘glory to the heroes’.

Dadin became popular after exposing widespread abuse and torture in Russian prisons. The Russian Justice sentenced him in 2015 to three years in prison in what became the first conviction under a law that criminalizes participation in unauthorized protests. During his 15 months of detention, he reported daily torture.
