Professor of Biological Sciences at Escuela Alborada de Lampa prepares research on sowing legumes with low water consumption


At the Alborada School, in Lampa, in the Metropolitan Region, the teacher is looking for the possibility of developing new methods of growing vegetables and legumes with low water consumption.

Lorenzo Palma, Science in Chile.- Since 2017, Professor Wallace da Silva Santiago has been living in Chile, but it was from 2022 when he began to work as a teacher at La Escuela Alborada de Lampa, located in the Metropolitan Region. In this institution, he teaches biology, chemistry and physics, taking advantage of his degree in Biological Sciences.

The Alborada School with a humanist scientific approach and Professor Wallace da Silva explains that during the first half of 2023 he began to develop a technique for cultivating and planting vegetables, with very low water consumption. “This technique seeks to be innovative, having as principles the low economic cost, being 100% organic, economically viable, socially just and ecologically correct, only I carry out the experimentation”explained the science teacher.

On February 3, 2023, using three 20 x 25 bags, each with a capacity of approximately 1 kg of substrate, were used in this study. In each of these bags, 4 black bean seeds were planted, belonging to the species Phaseolus vulgariswhich is widely recognized in the family Fabaceae.

Phaseolus vulgaris, commonly known as common bean, is a species of leguminous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is one of the most cultivated and consumed species of beans worldwide. Originally from Central and South America, the common bean has spread widely as a food crop in different regions of the world.

“Although a total of 12 seeds were sown, only 11 of them managed to germinate successfully. The experiment lasted for 37 days, using only 20 ml of water every 3 days for each pot, until March 11, 2023, at which time the death of the plant was confirmed. However, the results revealed an interesting fact: the substrate used, prepared with a gel developed from a special formula developed by Prof. Wallace, allows to maintain the life of the plant with a minimum amount of water. It should be noted that the beans were planted at a depth of 7 cm below the level of the substrate, in a mixture of soil and cotton fibers. This experiment offers valuable information for the study of plant germination and growth under specific conditions”, explained the professor.
