In 2020 Sega announced a live-action movie based on Like a Dragon, a video game saga that we knew at the time as Yakuza, but since then something has changed. Four years later, the film has become a series of six episodes that we can see on Prime Video starting October 24, according to announced Amazon.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza is a live-action series based on the saga developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio that will feature an original story in which Kazuma Kiryu, the protagonist, will be played by Ryoma Takeuchi. We still don’t know the details of the plot, but Amazon advances that the action, crime and suspense series spans two time periods, 1995 and 2005, to follow Kazuma’s life, childhood friends and the repercussions of Kazuma’s decisions. Kiryu, a “yakuza with a strong sense of justice, duty and humanity.”

Amazon adds that Like a Dragon: Yakuza “showcases modern Japan and the stories of its characters, like the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, that the games have failed to explore.” The six chapters that make up the series will be distributed in two batches and the first three will be available on October 24. In the direction of the series we find two names, Masaharu Take (The Naked Director) and Kengo Takimoto (Kamen Teacher), while the script and adaptation are carried out by Sean Crouch and Yugo Nakamura.

For now there is no trailer or images where we can see Kamurochō, the fictional district based on Kabukichō, a red light district located in Shinjuku (Tokyo) and where many of the games’ plots take place, or how Ryoma Takeuchi looks like Kazuma Kiryu .

With Like a Dragon: Yakuza, the Sega-owned saga will join an increasingly extensive list of games that make the leap to the small screen. If done well, series have proven to be a very good means of bringing an intellectual property that only had a presence in video games to new audiences. The Last of Us or Fallout are two good examples. We’ll see if Like a Dragon repeats the same formula on Prime Video. If it manages to attract a new audience, those interested will find a video game saga with more than half a dozen installments and some others. spin-off.
