Preventive detention is issued against Nicanor Boluarte, brother of the president of Peru

( Spanish) –– This Tuesday, Judge Richard Concepción Carhuancho imposed preventive detention on Nicanor Boluarte, brother of the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, accused of criminal organization and influence peddling in the case known as “Los Waykis en lashadow”, which investigates the alleged appointment of authorities in order to create a political party.

Carhuancho established the measure of 36 months of preventive detention after considering that there is a risk of flight.

The imposition of the measure occurred at a hearing that Nicanor Boluarte did not attend. His lawyer, Luis Vivanco, said he does not know his whereabouts. contacted the jurist for more information and is awaiting a response.

The Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office has been investigating Nicanor Boluarte since 2023. In May, Boluarte was preliminarily detained for 10 days in this case. He pleaded not guilty and, shortly after, an Appeals Chamber revoked the measure of deprivation of liberty against him.

Vivanco then said that Boluarte “has never received a cent from anyone” nor has he committed any crime.

“He has not appointed any authority, because he does not have the capacity, the competence to do so, and he has not intervened in the use of prefects, sub-prefects to fill out forms that promote the creation of the Citizens for Peru party,” he said.

For its part, the leadership of the Citizens for Peru party has denied having links with Boluarte.

In May, in the context of Boluarte’s arrest, Colonel Harvey Colchado told the Peruvian Congress that he had been asked to “archive” the case of the president’s brother. Colchado was coordinator of the Police Special Team that supports the Special Team of Prosecutors Against Corruption (Eficcop) and head of the High Complexity Crime Investigation Division (Diviac).

The Special Police Team that supports Eficcop was deactivated by President Boluarte one day before her brother’s arrest. For this reason, the Public Ministry opened an investigation into the president.
