The outgoing president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, announced that next Monday, after the results of Sunday’s elections and regardless of whether they are favorable for his space, he will call for a great national pact with all sectors of the country to promote progress . “I have no fear” about the election results, he said.

Abinader made the comment on Monday in his last weekly press conference before the elections, where he responded to complaints about human trafficking and bribe payments for the illegal entry of foreigners into the country.

He added that the country has managed to make significant progress in the fight against corruption at all levels. However, he admitted that despite the progress, the operations of the General Directorate of Migration could have increased considerably due to the special situation in Haiti.

“We are facing an important challenge, where cases have even been brought to justice. Last week there were prosecutions for corruption, but we must continue to advance on this issue,” added the president.

Abinader highlighted the sensitivity of the borders and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continuing to combat these problems, although he acknowledged that there is still work to do in this regard.

Abinader praised the talent of Dominican athletes

On the other hand, President Abinader highlighted the talent of Dominican athletes and their commitment to honor the name of the country in international competitions, while recalling the investment made in the sports field during his mandate.

Abinader led the delivery of checks of approximately $1,720 to each of the athletes qualified for the Paris Olympic Games as a stimulus during this stage prior to the Olympic event.

During his weekly press conference at the National Palace, Abinader expressed: “this incentive is fair and never seen before. I am sure that our Olympic athletes will bring us many medals.”

For his part, Sports Minister Francisco Camacho highlighted that more than 1.3 million Dominicans have participated in recreational programs of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation during this administration, including a free learning program at the ‘Juan Pablo Duarte’ Olympic Center. and the Eastern Park.

“As a result of this, two athletes who began swimming as part of this program are now part of the national team,” the minister explained.

During his meeting with the media, President Abinader announced that the Government has already delivered 235 million pesos for the preparation and participation of the Dominican delegation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The president also referred to the 1,037 sports facilities that have been built or renovated under his administration. Abinader reported that of the 88 planned sports centers, 51 have been built or completely rebuilt, of which 49 are already in operation and 39 are in the process of construction.

The president revealed that the academies of the Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks will soon open in the country.

Abinader also highlighted the support provided to the Dominican Baseball League (Lidom), the investment for the World Classic and the holding of Major League preseason games, such as those played this year between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Rays. Bay.
