The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, denied on Thursday that there are Chinese soldiers in the canal that crosses the Central American country, reiterating that there is no interference or participation of the Asian country in the interoceanic trade route.
In a post on the Truth Social network on Wednesday, US President-elect Donald Trump accused Chinese soldiers of illegally operating the channel, the same day he announced the nomination of Kevin Marino Cabreraas the next ambassador of the North American country in Panama.
“There are no Chinese soldiers in the Canal, for the love of God, the world is free to visit the canal,” Mulino said at a press conference when asked about Trump’s comments.
In recent days, the Republican has threatened that the United States will regain control over the channelwhich it administered for decades, arguing that its authorities are “swindling” American ships that cross it.
