The president of Ecuador, Gillermo Lasso, will travel to the United States this Wednesday, “a medical intervention”, and will be back in Quito on May 28, official sources reported.
“Tomorrow, after the Report to the Nation, President Guillermo Lasso will travel to the United States for a medical intervention,” the office of the Presidency reported through a message on social networks. “On Sunday, May 28, he will return to the country. This trip was brought to the attention of the Constitutional Court.”
In the letter Sent by the president to the president of the Constitutional Court of Ecuador, Alí Lozada, Lasso explains that he will be absent “for personal matters, May 24 in the afternoon, to May 28, 2023.”
The president added that since it is an unofficial matter, all expenses will be borne by him.
Lasso dissolved the National Assembly on May 17 under decree, with which the legislative and presidential elections must be brought forward. The move was taken one day after presenting his defense before the camera in a political trial against him.
The president was facing a political trial for alleged embezzlement related to a contract in the company Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana (Flopec). The dissolution of the assembly avoided this path of prosecution.
