US President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday during his trip to Las Vegas, where he had several events planned with the area’s Latino community.
“He is vaccinated and boosted and experiencing mild symptoms. He will return to Delaware, where he will isolate and continue to fully perform all of his duties during that time,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a written statement.
The president’s doctor provided public details about his condition, saying that he had symptoms of the virus such as a runny nose and cough, with general malaise.
“He felt fine for his first event of the day, but as he was not feeling better, he was tested for COVID-19 at the point of care and the results came back positive for the COVID-19 virus,” he added.
Biden was scheduled to speak at UnidosUS’ annual conference in Las Vegas at around 1:30 p.m. local time, but about an hour and a half later, the organization’s president said the president would not be able to participate in the event.
“Unfortunately, I was on the phone with President Biden and he shared his deep disappointment that he couldn’t join us this afternoon. The president has been to a lot of events, as we all know, and he just tested positive for COVID. So, of course, we understand that he needs to take the precautions that have been recommended to him and, obviously, you didn’t want to put anyone at risk,” said Janet Murguía.
The organization’s president explained that Biden had “asked” her to tell the attendees that “they would not get rid of him so easily.”
Biden managed to give an interview with Latin channels during his visit to a restaurant in Las Vegas, where he also shared time with local volunteers.
