President Iván Duque will leave 30% of protected maritime areas

The President Ivan Duqueannounced that the country will have 30% of its marine protected areas in the coming days, making Colombia the first in the Western Hemisphere to achieve this goal.

We are not going to wait for the year 2030, a few days ago the Colombian Academy of Sciences approved four new protected areas. With this approval, in the next few days 30% of Colombia’s marine areas will be protecteds”, said the president, during his speech at the II Conference of the UN Oceans that started this Monday in Lisbon.

Likewise, Duque defended that declaring protected areas is a way to face the “destruction” suffered by the marine biodiversity and that it also shows the fishing communities “that there may be additional sources of income.”
