The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, received on Tuesday in Tegucigalpa the secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Alejandro Mayorkas, with whom she discussed the future relationship between the two countries, especially in terms of immigration.
“We have dealt with important issues such as TPS. We have also dealt with important issues such as human trafficking, human rights and especially the important part, which is what is coming and what benefits it can bring to both countries,” revealed the president’s private secretary, Héctor Manuel Zelaya, in a video released in social networks.
The meeting at Government House was also attended by the Honduran Foreign Minister, Enrique Reina, and the US Ambassador to Honduras, Laura Dogu.
Precisely the US embassy also detailed on Tuesday, in a releasethat Mayorkas also plans to meet with the Minister of Security, Ramón Sabillón, “as well as with other officials from the security services and law enforcement agencies, in order to discuss issues of mutual interest and address the current migration challenges in the region”.
During your trip to Hondurasthe head of the US Department of Homeland Security, is also scheduled to meet with representatives of the main United Nations agencies operating in the country, especially in support of migrants and the most vulnerable populations.
Mayorkas’ objective, according to the embassy, is to follow up “on the commitments assumed at the Summit of the Americas and during the announcement of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection”, backed at the time by the Castro Government.
