The National Electoral Council of Ecuador has asked the Organization of American States (OAS), the Andean Parliament, the European Union and the Carter Center, among other organizations, their collaboration for the electoral process that will choose a president, a vice president and legislators August 20.
CNA counselor Enrique Pita said that this includes “approving the modalities of conducted and independent international electoral observation for the electoral processes to be carried out in Ecuador in the second half of 2023.”
Ecuador entered a process of early elections after President Guillermo Lasso decided on May 17 to dissolve the National Assembly and call new elections.
From that moment, the National Electoral Council began the work of carrying out the calls and registration of candidacies in record time. Until June 10, candidacies will be able to register, which for the moment have only made known their intention to participate in the elections.
There are 9 possible candidates. The principle of gender parity must also be respected, where 50% of the representation must be women. This point came to fruition after various organizations asked that it be respected.
Rosario Utreras, representative of the Women’s Collective, said that “it is a legitimate claim to have political participation with equity.”
“We are demanding that the law be complied with,” he declared.
The CNE has also requested the support of the National Police to guarantee security in the voting centers.
All this in the midst of the murder of a prosecutor in the coastal town of Durán and the death threats against the State Attorney General, Diana Salazar, by armed men who have indicated through a video their intention to assassinate her.
